Lumecca IPL treatment

Lumecca IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment reduces skin hyperpigmentation, sun damage, rosacea, couperosis, and signs of aging, restoring brightness and a youthful, even skin tone.

What is the treatment?

Lumecca IPL uses powerful light energy with wavelengths that interact with red and brown pigments in the skin, including hemoglobin and melanin. These pigments absorb the light energy and are destroyed, often with just one treatment. Hyperpigmentation spots break down, and the pigment is absorbed and removed through the body’s bloodstream and lymphatic system. Vascular damage disappears almost immediately. Lumecca offers high precision and resolution in targeting sun-induced pigmentation and redness, making it one of the most effective treatments for these issues. This popular anti-aging device treatment is quick, and results can be seen after just one session.

What results can be achieved with the treatment?

Lumecca IPL treatment is suitable for all areas of the body, with excellent results. The most commonly treated areas are those that are most exposed to the sun: the face, neck, décolleté, legs, hands, and arms. This treatment is particularly effective for:

  • Skin tone changes caused by aging (red or brown pigmentation)
  • Sun damage
  • Vascular changes (broken and dilated blood vessels, spider veins, cherry angiomas)
  • Couperosis
  • Rosacea
  • Deep and superficial pigmentation changes, including melasma
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and erythema (post-acne)

Note:

This device is suitable for Fitzpatrick skin types I-III, and may not be appropriate for those with darker skin types. At Klinik Linnea, alternative treatments are available, such as Hollywood Spectra laser, microneedling, pHformula chemical peels MELA 1-3, and ZO Skin Health and AlumierMD skincare products for hyperpigmentation in darker skin types.

Are there any restrictions for the treatment?

Treatment is not performed on pregnant or breastfeeding women. Contraindications for the treatment include active herpes, inflammatory conditions or active skin diseases on the treatment area (e.g., acne), hypertrophic scars, porphyria, skin lesions or open wounds on the treatment area, active skin cancer, warts, bacterial or fungal infections, frostbite or sunburned skin, solar keratosis, hemophilia, or scleroderma.

Underlying health conditions and medications should be stable. Medications that affect blood clotting should be mentioned to the treating nurse or doctor. If you have any questions regarding the suitability of the treatment for you, please contact Klinik Linnea’s staff.

Recovery time

The recovery time depends on the skin issue being treated, but typically, reactions following the treatment subside completely within a week if aftercare instructions are followed as advised by our professionals.

Maintaining results

Klinik Linnea recommends 2-4 treatments depending on your skin type for optimal results. Treatments are recommended to be spaced approximately four weeks apart.

Lumecca IPL treatment can also be combined with other treatments offered at the clinic, depending on the skin issue and skin type. Common combination treatments include chemical peels, microneedling, and other device-based treatments.

How should I prepare for the treatment?

Stop using products containing retinol or strong acids three days before the treatment. Discontinue the use of self-tanning products on the treatment area one week before the treatment and avoid sun exposure two weeks prior. Do not wax, sugar, or perform strong chemical peels on the treated skin area two weeks before the treatment.

What is included in the treatment?

The treatment includes a Lumecca consultation, skin cleansing, the procedure itself, aftercare cream, aftercare instructions, and a relaxing and rejuvenating moment at Klinik Linnea.

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment duration depends on the size of the area being treated, but on average, it takes 20-60 minutes.

Is there pain during the treatment?

Moderate. During the treatment, you will feel brief warmth on the skin, with the IPL pulse feeling like a short snap or pinch. The Lumecca handpiece has a cooling tip that helps alleviate discomfort during the treatment.

What are the most common reactions after the treatment?

Redness, swelling, a tightening or warming sensation on the treated area are normal reactions after the treatment. These symptoms usually subside within a few days. In rare cases, swelling may persist for up to a week on the treated area. Depending on the condition being treated, bruising may occur. Pigmentation changes may temporarily darken before they peel off, leaving the skin smooth and even.

What are the aftercare instructions?

Maintaining good hygiene after the treatment is crucial. Avoid touching the skin on the first day. Gentle cleansing and sufficient hydration with products recommended by our staff are advised to speed up the healing process. Avoid rubbing the skin. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise and sauna use for the first 1-3 days. Makeup can be applied to the treated area 24 hours after the treatment. Strong active ingredients (retinol, AHA, BHA) should be avoided for 5 days after the treatment. Sun exposure should be avoided for at least a month after the treatment. To maintain treatment results, protecting the skin from the sun is very important. Klinik Linnea recommends using SPF50 sunscreen year-round. If you have any questions about recovery, please contact the professional who treated you.
