Aesthetic botulinum toxin treatments

Have the lines and wrinkles on your upper face started to bother you with age? Are you concerned about the vertical “frown lines” between your eyebrows and nose? Would you like to get rid of horizontal forehead lines or the wrinkles around your eye corners and eyelids?

With aesthetic botulinum toxin treatment, we can effectively eliminate and prevent wrinkles and lines on the upper face. As a result, your expression will look immediately younger, fresher, and more relaxed.

At Klinik Linnea, we also offer medical botulinum toxin treatments for conditions like migraines, bruxism (teeth grinding), and excessive sweating.

What is the treatment?

Wrinkles on the upper face develop when the muscles beneath the skin contract, forming lines and wrinkles in the overlying skin. During the treatment, botulinum toxin is injected into the muscle beneath the skin, partially or completely relaxing it. Botulinum toxin works by blocking nerve impulses in the injected muscle, which temporarily prevents muscle contractions, relaxing the muscle and calming its activity.

Are there any restrictions for this treatment?

Botulinum toxin treatments are not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals. At Klinik Linnea, there is an 18-year age limit for injectable treatments. Contraindications for botulinum toxin treatments include: active herpes, inflammation in the treatment area, skin diseases, open wounds or skin damage in the treatment area, skin cancer, warts, bacterial/fungal infections, or frostbite/burned skin. The treatment should also be avoided if you have any disease affecting muscle function (e.g., myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome), or if you are allergic to botulinum toxin type A or albumin. If you are taking medication that affects blood clotting, please inform your treating nurse or doctor. If you have any questions about whether the treatment is suitable for you, feel free to contact the Klinik Linnea staff directly.

Recovery time

Most of Klinik Linnea’s clients can return to work and continue their normal activities immediately after the treatment. Some clients may experience common side effects at the injection site, such as redness, tenderness, or bruising. These reactions usually disappear within a couple of days, so we recommend taking them into account when considering the timing of your botulinum toxin treatment.

The results typically begin to show within 3-10 days after the procedure, with the full effect visible by two weeks.

Maintaining results

The effects of botulinum toxin typically last 4-6 months. Klinik Linnea recommends maintaining your results by having treatments 2-3 times a year. Too frequent dosing can increase the formation of antibodies, so we advise spacing out treatments by at least three months to minimize this risk.

Collection of Patient Data

For recording of botulinum toxin treatments, PRP treatments, and Class 4 laser treatments, we use the Acute patient information system (eArchive, ePrescription). Acute is a comprehensive, secure, and Kela (Finnish social insurance institution) certified A-class patient information system.

Our company’s legal basis for maintaining a patient register and collecting and processing personal data is outlined in the following laws:

  • 785/1992 Patient’s Rights Act
  • 152/1990 Private Health Care Act
  • 94/2022 Regulation on Patient Documents by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health

The Act on the Electronic Processing of Client Data in Social and Health Care (784/2021, Client Data Act) came into effect in November 2021. Link to the act.

According to this law, a healthcare service provider that uses an electronic patient information system must connect to the national information system services (KANTA archive). Therefore, our system, Acute, is approved by the Finnish National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) and compatible with the Kanta system. We upload patient data from botulinum toxin treatments, PRP treatments, and Class 4 laser treatments to the Kanta archive. Patients can also access and manage their patient records in the Omakanta service (the patient’s personal archive).

The system will store the patient’s personal identification number, name, contact information, address, and treatment details as necessary. All entries are made personally by the provider of the treatment, using their own name and professional title. The system allows us to check who has viewed the patient’s information.

Please ensure that you bring proof of your identity when arriving for your treatment. Bring an identification document with you (e.g., Kela card or driver’s license).

At Klinik Linnea, aesthetic botulinum toxin treatments are performed by registered nurses and doctors.

Medical botulinum toxin treatments (for bruxism, excessive underarm sweating, and migraine treatment) are offered exclusively by doctors at Klinik Linnea.

We have received registration from the Regional State Administrative Agency and Valvira, granting Klinik Linnea permission to provide healthcare services and perform botulinum toxin treatments.

How should I prepare for the treatment?

We recommend eating before your treatment and arriving without makeup. Due to the increased risk of bruising and bleeding, we do not recommend taking anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., Ibuprofen/Burana) for three days prior to the treatment, and natural supplements (e.g., Omega-3, Vitamin E) for one week before the treatment. If you need pain relief, we recommend using paracetamol. We will send you an electronic medical history form prior to your appointment, which you should complete before arriving for your treatment.

What does the treatment include?

The procedure is quick and lasts approximately 30 minutes. Before the botulinum toxin treatment, you will have a consultation where we will discuss your needs, based on which the treatment will be planned. During the botulinum toxin treatment, the treatment plan and any questions or concerns about the procedure will be addressed. The treatment begins with a skin cleanse, followed by the botulinum toxin injections. After the treatment, we will review aftercare instructions. If you wish, we offer a complimentary follow-up visit two weeks after the treatment.

There is no pain, or only mild discomfort.

What are the typical reactions after the treatment?

Some patients may experience normal side effects at the injection site, such as redness, tenderness, or bruising. These reactions usually resolve within a couple of days, and we recommend considering this when choosing the timing for your botulinum toxin treatment. After the treatment, you may experience headaches for a few days.

What are the aftercare instructions for the treatment?

We will review the detailed aftercare instructions during the treatment. On the day of the treatment, avoid touching the treated area and ensure that you maintain good hygiene in the treated area. Avoid excessive facial expressions and remain in an upright position for at least two hours after the procedure. For the next two days, avoid strenuous physical activity, saunas, sweating, and direct UV exposure. We also recommend avoiding other facial treatments, facial massages, and any procedures around the mouth and face for two weeks after the treatment. For the first 24 hours, do not apply makeup to the treated area due to the risk of infection. Klinik Linnea recommends using SPF 50 sunscreen year-round. If you have any questions about your recovery, please contact the professional who treated you.
