In PRP treatment, also known as the “vampire treatment,” the client’s own plasma is used to achieve multiple benefits for skin care and for treating conditions such as hair loss. PRP treatment is a natural and effective therapy based on platelet-rich plasma. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is an autologous biological blood product that contains a high concentration of growth factors and other bioactive molecules. These play an important role in stimulating cell proliferation, tissue growth, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels).
PRF, or platelet-rich fibrin, is a newer generation treatment. It is often called “natural PRP” because it does not use any additives.
What is PRP treatment?
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is a natural and effective treatment method that utilizes the regenerative properties of platelet-rich plasma to deliver growth factors and bioactive molecules to the skin. These active substances stimulate cell proliferation, tissue growth, collagen and elastin production, hyaluronic acid formation, and the development of new blood vessels. By using the growth factors in your own plasma, PRP promotes skin cell renewal and improves microcirculation. Beyond aesthetic benefits, PRP has been clinically proven to aid in wound healing and tissue repair. PRP treatment can also be combined with other therapies to enhance results.
PRP is prepared by isolating platelets and plasma from other blood components. The preparation method impacts the final composition and platelet concentration of the product. The healing and regenerative effects of PRP are linked to growth factors and other bioactive molecules stored in the platelets or plasma. The concentration of these growth factors depends on the preparation process and PRP quality (platelet quality, presence of leukocytes) and may also vary between individuals.
What is PRF treatment?
PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) is an advanced regenerative treatment that renews the skin at the cellular level by activating the body’s own repair mechanisms. The treatment brightens the skin’s tone and texture by improving microcirculation, giving the face a healthy glow and helping to even out pigmentation differences. At the same time, it increases the number of fibroblasts, which boosts the production of collagen and elastin – key components responsible for skin firmness.
The renewal process is based on the efficient breakdown of damaged tissue, such as sun-damaged skin, and the acceleration of cell division, allowing new and healthier cells to replace older ones. PRF also promotes the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis), which optimizes oxygen supply to the tissues. This is particularly valuable in scalp treatments. In addition, the growth factors contained in the preparation help calm inflammatory conditions such as acne.
Unlike traditional methods, PRF forms a bioactive fibrin network that provides subtle and natural fullness to fine lines and the under-eye area. It is exceptionally effective in treating dark under-eye circles, as it thickens the skin and reduces the visibility of underlying blood vessels.
What results can be achieved?
PRP treatment, or traditional plasma therapy, is particularly known for its ability to provide tissues with a rapid and strong surge of growth factors. In the treatment of hair loss, it has established itself as one of the most effective methods, as it strengthens hair follicles, thickens the hair shaft, and activates new growth.
In medical use, PRP significantly accelerates the healing of sports injuries, such as tendon and muscle damage, and can also relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis by reducing pain and improving mobility. In skin care, it brightens facial tone and gives the skin an immediate fresh appearance, although regular maintenance treatments are often required to maintain the effect.
PRF treatment, on the other hand, produces deeper and longer-lasting results due to the slow release of growth factors. It is exceptionally effective for rejuvenating the eye area, as it thickens thin skin and thereby reduces darkness and the visibility of blood vessels. PRF acts like a natural filler that restores lost facial volume and softens fine lines very subtly without creating an artificial result.
In addition, the treatment permanently improves skin structure by stimulating new collagen production, which can lead to smaller pores and effective smoothing of acne scars and sun damage.
Are there any restrictions on treatment?
PRP is not recommended for individuals with blood cancers or skin cancer in the treatment area, hepatitis C, HIV or AIDS, cardiovascular disease requiring blood thinners, platelet dysfunction syndrome (e.g., Von Willebrand disease), critical thrombocytopenia, or acute infections. It is also not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals. If you have any concerns about your suitability for the treatment, please contact Klinik Linnea’s staff.
Recovery time
PRP treatment involves no significant downtime, though injection-based methods may cause temporary redness. Minor swelling and bruising are possible, particularly when small needles are used. Most clients can resume their normal routines immediately.
Maintenance of results
Optimal and long-lasting results are achieved with a treatment series.
We recommend PRP treatment as a series of 6–10 sessions, performed every 3–4 weeks. After this, maintenance treatments are recommended 2–3 times per year.
We generally recommend PRF treatment as a series of 3–5 sessions, performed every 4–6 weeks. This slightly less frequent schedule compared to PRP is based on PRF’s ability to release growth factors gradually into the tissue for up to ten days after treatment.
The exact length of the treatment series is always customized individually based on an assessment by a skin professional at Klinik Linnea. The effects of the treatment usually begin to appear after about three weeks. PRP and PRF treatments can also be combined with other treatment methods.
Remember to take care of your skin with appropriate home care products as well. Home care improves treatment results and helps maintain them. Klinik Linnea recommends high-quality ZO Skin Health or AlumierMD products for home care.
Patient data collection
For documentation of botulinum treatments, PRP and PRF treatments, and class 4 laser treatments, we use the Acute patient information system (eArchive, ePrescription). Acute is a comprehensive, secure, and Kela Kanta-certified Class A patient information system.
The legal basis for our company to maintain a patient register and to collect and process personal data is defined in Finnish legislation: the Act on the Status and Rights of Patients (785/1992), the Act on Private Healthcare (152/1990), and the Decree of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health on Patient Documents (94/2022).
The Act on the Electronic Processing of Client Data in Healthcare and Social Welfare (784/2021, Client Data Act) entered into force in November 2021.
According to this law, healthcare service providers using an electronic patient information system must join the national information system services (KANTA archive). Therefore, the system we use, Acute, is approved by Valvira and compatible with the Kanta system. We transfer patient data related to botulinum treatments, PRP treatments, and class 4 laser treatments to the Kanta archive. Patients can also view and manage their patient record entries stored in the patient data archive through the Omakanta service.
The system records the client’s personal identity number, name, contact details, address, and relevant treatment information where necessary. Entries are made personally by the professional who performed the procedure, under their own name and professional identification number. The system also allows verification of who has accessed a client’s information.
Please be prepared to present proof of identity when arriving for treatment. Bring a valid identification document with you (for example, a Kela card or a driver’s license).
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I prepare for the treatment?
No special preparation is required.
What does the treatment include?
The treatment includes an initial skin consultation, skin cleansing, the procedure itself, aftercare creams, aftercare instructions, and a relaxing Klinik Linnea moment. A blood sample is taken to prepare the PRP solution, which is administered into the skin through mesotherapy-like microinjections. The procedure can be done manually using a needle and syringe, with a mesotherapy device (mesogun), or combined with microneedling.
How long does the treatment take?
Approximately 60–90 minutes.
Is the treatment painful?
Pain is minimal or nonexistent. Some tingling, prickling, and warmth in the skin may occur but are normal and short-lived.
What are the typical post-treatment reactions?
You may experience mild redness and tightness immediately afterward. Swelling or dryness might occur later but typically resolves within a week. Good aftercare accelerates recovery.
What are the aftercare instructions?
We will review aftercare instructions during the session. On the day of treatment, avoid touching the area and maintain strict hygiene. Replace face towels and pillowcases with clean ones. Makeup can be applied the next day. Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours and saunas for 1–3 days. Always protect your skin with SPF 50 sunscreen. If you have any concerns, please contact your practitioner.
