Rosacea and Spring — What You Need to Know? Nurse Elina Explains

04/17/2026

Spring is often a welcome season for the skin — daylight increases and the heavy winter period is left behind. However, for rosacea-prone skin, spring can be surprisingly challenging.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, typically presenting as redness on the cheeks, facial flushing, skin sensitivity, and visible broken capillaries, especially around the nose and cheeks. In more severe cases, it may also involve red bumps and pustules. Although rosacea can be difficult to manage, it can be effectively controlled with the right choices.

Why can spring worsen rosacea?

In spring, the skin is exposed to several changes at once:

  • Increased UV exposure → one of the most significant rosacea triggers
  • Temperature fluctuations → moving from cold to warm stresses the blood vessels
  • Wind and dry air → weaken the skin barrier
  • Pollen season → may increase skin sensitivity and reactivity

Many people notice increased redness or heightened skin reactivity during spring compared to winter.

How to care for rosacea-prone skin in spring

1. Sun protection is essential
Daily SPF is one of the most important steps in managing rosacea. Opt for skin-friendly, mineral (physical) sunscreens that are less likely to irritate the skin. Note: SPF in foundation or day cream alone is not sufficient.

2. Focus on strengthening the skin barrier
In spring, the goal is to calm and reinforce the skin. Use hydrating, barrier-supporting moisturizers (e.g. ZO Skin Health Daily Power Defense or AlumierMD Hydradew), avoid overly active or irritating ingredients, and choose gentle cleansers (e.g. ZO Skin Health Hydrating Cleanser or AlumierMD Sensicalm).

3. Avoid over-exfoliation
Rosacea skin generally does not tolerate strong acids well. Especially in spring, the skin may react more easily.
Mechanical exfoliation doesn’t need to be completely avoided, but it must be very gentle — for example, AlumierMD MicroPolish once a week.

4. Identify your personal triggers
Common triggers include: hot beverages, alcohol, sauna, stress, and spicy food.

Not everyone reacts to the same factors, so listening to your own skin is key.

What aesthetic treatments are suitable for rosacea?

The right treatments can significantly support rosacea management:

  • pHformula CR resurfacing helps calm, strengthen, and protect sensitive rosacea skin while reducing redness and inflammation
  • Lumecca IPL (-10% throughout April) evens out skin tone, reduces redness, and treats superficial blood vessels
  • Skin-boosting injectable treatments improve skin quality and resilience (e.g. Profhilo, Viscoderm Hydrobooster, Cellbooster LIFT)
  • Microneedling can be suitable for many and strengthens the skin over time, but for rosacea it always requires individual assessment

Spring is a great time to start or continue treatments, but timing and the current condition of the skin should always be considered.

In rosacea skincare, balance is key: protect, calm, and avoid over-stressing the skin. With small, consistent choices, flare-ups can be prevented and overall skin health supported.

If your rosacea symptoms worsen or become more pronounced, a personalized treatment plan is the best approach.
