Liposuction

Liposuction is a very common plastic surgery procedure in Finland. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat from certain areas of the body or face.

It is not a weight loss method, but a body shaping method that helps remove local fat deposits that do not necessarily respond to diet or exercise. At Klinik Linnea, we perform liposuction of small and medium-sized areas under local anesthesia.

With liposuction, fat cells are removed gently but effectively using the tumescent technique.

The most common treatment areas for liposuction are:

· Chin and neck: Double chin removal and jawline clarification.
· Arms: Upper arm shaping.
· Abdomen: Especially removal of fat deposits in the lower abdomen and flanks.
· Back: Especially removal of so-called “back folds”.

Who is suitable for liposuction?

Liposuction offers a solution for removing unwanted fat deposits from different areas of the body. Often, stubborn fat deposits are due to hereditary factors. Sometimes fat accumulates in areas where it is almost impossible to remove it with a healthy lifestyle. Liposuction is a particularly effective method for correcting these local problem areas.

The result after liposuction is permanent if the weight does not clearly increase after the procedure. Liposuction does not remove all fat cells from the treated area, and if the weight increases, the amount of fat may increase. It is important to remember that liposuction is not a means of losing weight and cannot replace healthy lifestyles, such as a balanced diet and regular exercise, which are key to lasting well-being and weight control.

Recovery time

Recovery varies from person to person, but is often quick, and most patients can return to their daily routines and work within a few days. Please note that support garments should be worn in the treated area for at least four weeks to ensure the best possible outcome and speedy recovery.

Bruising, swelling and mild pain in the treated area are normal after liposuction. These symptoms usually disappear within a few weeks. The final result is usually visible after a few months, when the swelling has completely subsided. You will receive individual aftercare instructions during your consultation.

How do I prepare for the procedure?

Preparing for liposuction is important for a successful outcome and a smooth recovery.

Weeks before the procedure:
· During your consultation with our surgeon, your health and suitability for the procedure will be assessed. Discuss your wishes and expectations with your surgeon. You may be asked to undergo various laboratory tests and other examinations to confirm your health. Discuss with your surgeon about the medications and supplements you are taking. Certain medications (e.g. blood thinners, aspirin, ibuprofen), and some supplements (e.g. Omega) can increase the risk of bleeding. Their use should be discontinued according to the surgeon’s instructions.

· Smoking impairs blood circulation and slows down wound healing. We recommend that you stop smoking at least 4 weeks before the procedure and continue to be smoke-free after the procedure.

· Eat a varied and healthy diet and exercise regularly. Good general fitness promotes recovery.

On the day of the procedure:
· Avoid alcohol at least 24 hours before the procedure, as alcohol can increase the risk of bleeding

· Choose loose and comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and take off.

· Take the medications your surgeon has instructed you to take in the morning.

· If you are given sedatives, you will not be able to drive yourself. So arrange a ride home.

How does the procedure proceed?

During the consultation, you will be given an appointment time for the procedure. Arrive punctually. A nurse will meet you and go through the procedure with you. You will receive sedative premedication and pain medication and you will be prepared for the procedure. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia through small punctures. After the procedure, you can recover in peace in the aftercare room, where the operating room nurse will go through the aftercare instructions with you and book you an appointment for a check-up.

What are the aftercare instructions?

After liposuction, it is important to follow careful aftercare. You can take a shower 1-2 days after the procedure, but you should avoid saunas and sweaty exercise for 1-2 weeks. Brownish fluid may leak from the surgical wounds for 1-2 days, which is normal. For large bruises, you can use Hirudoid Forte cream, but be aware of its possible skin irritation. After liposuction, it is important to wear compression garments in the treated area for at least four weeks to ensure optimal healing. Wound dressings are typically left in place for about 2 weeks and are dried with pressure after showering.

Contact your doctor if the wound becomes red, swollen, hot, or oozing pus, or if the pain increases or is not relieved by painkillers.
