Upper eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures in Finland. The aim of the procedure is to remove excess tissue from the eyelids and correct sagging and other signs of aging by reshaping the tissue.

Who is upper eyelid surgery suitable for?

Upper eyelid surgery is suitable for people who want to correct heavy-looking eyes, a feeling of heaviness, and limited vision. Sometimes the heavy feeling in the eyes is partly due to the forehead and eyebrows drooping, in which case a brow lift may also be needed in conjunction with upper eyelid surgery. Typically, the procedure is performed on people aged 30–70 whose excess upper eyelid tissue causes functional or aesthetic problems.

The most common reasons for upper eyelid surgery are:

· Aging: With age, skin elasticity decreases and fatty tissue may accumulate on the upper eyelid, causing the eyelid to droop. This can make the eyes look tired and obscure part of the field of vision.

· Hereditary factors: Some people may have a genetic predisposition to drooping upper eyelids, which may appear at a young age.

· Functional reasons: If drooping upper eyelids partially obstruct vision, surgery may be necessary to correct functional problems.

· Aesthetic reasons: Many people seek surgery to improve their appearance, brighten their expression, and achieve a more youthful look. Drooping upper eyelids can give a tired or sad impression.

· Facial muscle tension and headaches: Some people may have a tendency to tense their facial muscles, especially by raising their eyebrows, which can lead to headaches. Surgery can help relieve headaches.

What kind of results can be achieved with this treatment?

The eyes appear fresher, more open, and more youthful. Drooping upper eyelids, which can partially obstruct the field of vision or create a tired appearance, can be effectively corrected. As a result of this treatment, the face appears brighter and more youthful. The surgery may also help with headaches.

Recovery time

After the surgery, you will be able to go home after a short follow-up. The scars left on the eyelid crease usually heal inconspicuously, but during the healing phase, the scar may be red. Bruising after surgery usually lasts for about 1-2 weeks, and makeup can be applied about 10 days after the procedure. The stitches are removed after about a week. It is important to remember that after the stitches are removed, the wound is still healing and cannot withstand friction or other stress. You can usually return to work about 1-2 weeks after the surgery.

How do I prepare for the procedure?

Weeks before the procedure:

· Our surgeon will assess your health and suitability for the procedure during a consultation. Discuss your wishes and expectations with the surgeon. You may be asked to undergo various laboratory tests and other examinations to confirm your health. Discuss any medications and dietary supplements you are taking with your surgeon. Certain medications (e.g., blood thinners, aspirin, ibuprofen) and some dietary supplements (e.g., omega) may increase the risk of bleeding. You should stop using them according to your surgeon’s instructions.

· Smoking impairs blood circulation, slows down wound healing, and increases the risk of infection. We recommend that you stop smoking at least 4 weeks before the procedure and continue to refrain from smoking after the procedure.

· Eat a varied and healthy diet and exercise regularly. Good general health promotes recovery.

On the day of the procedure:

· Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the procedure, as alcohol can increase the risk of bleeding.

· Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and take off.

· Take the medications prescribed by your surgeon in the morning.

· If you are given sedatives, you will not be able to drive yourself home. Arrange for a ride home.

How does the procedure proceed?

During the consultation, you will be given an appointment time for the procedure. Please arrive on time. A nurse will welcome you and go through the procedure with you. You will be given a sedative and pain medication, and you will be prepared for the procedure.

The procedure involves removing excess skin from the upper eyelid and, if necessary, fatty tissue. During the procedure, it is also possible to reposition the eyebrow from the same incision (upper eyelid surgery with eyebrow lift). After the procedure, you will be able to recover in peace in the recovery room, where a surgical nurse will go through the aftercare instructions with you and book you an appointment for a follow-up visit.

What are the aftercare instructions?

After the procedure, keep your head elevated while sleeping and avoid heavy exertion during the first few days. Cold packs (not directly on the skin) every 10–15 minutes will help reduce swelling and bruising. Painkillers (Panadol, Burana) can be taken if necessary. Keep the wound dry for 24–48 hours, after which you can gently rinse the wounds according to your doctor’s instructions.

Avoid saunas, swimming, and bathing until the wound has healed, for about 1–2 weeks. Stitches are usually removed after 5–7 days. Avoid using makeup for the first 8–10 days. Bruising and swelling usually disappear within 1–2 weeks, and you can cover the bruises with makeup once the wounds have healed. Remember to protect your skin from the sun and use sunscreen, as fresh scars are sensitive to pigment formation.
